Cowardly Silent Republicans (REVISED)

Capitol

Republicans control the White House, both chambers of Congress and stay silent about the POTUS and his disgraceful, disgusting behavior.

Trump and his sycophants get worse every day; nothing is being done by the Republican controlled Congress and the White House to make positive changes on any of the issues that the media have been writing/talking about for months. It’s depressing and repugnant. To make things even worse, all the panic-stricken people around Trump keep swearing they didn’t write the Anonymous article in the New York Times condemning the shenanigans in the White House. Now Trump wants everyone in his circle to take a polygraph test to try to identify the anonymous writer. What is this? Trump’s version of the KGB?  Force people to ‘fess up’?

These Republicans are, in my mind, a joke—a bad joke at that. Trump is loving the publicity and the chance to rant about “fake news” and calling the anonymous writer treasonous.

And absolutely nothing changes regarding important concerns. Consider these problems, some of which I’ve described in previous blogs:

  • Hundreds of children whose parents crossed the border between Mexico and the United States to legally apply for asylum are still separated. These youngsters are in the custody of the U.S. government and have not been reunited with their parents as of September 9, 2018.
  • Racism is still rampant in the United States. What have the Republicans done about this curse on our country? In my blog “The Racist in the White House” I pointed out that Trump’s racism has gone well beyond the White House to recently accelerated practices at the border in the southernmost part of Texas. There patrol agents are requiring people of Hispanic heritage who are American citizen to turn over their authentic passports for intense scrutiny. In addition, Hispanics with legitimate passports living and working in the United States are being denied renewal by the U.S. State Department. There’s no indication this practice has stopped. And I won’t get started on the Florida governor’s race between Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democrat, and Republican Representative Ron DeSantis. In a recent campaign rally DeSantis told his Republican audience “The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by” voting for Gillum, a black man. That’s a Republican racist at work.
  • Why have Republicans been reluctant to condemn the fact that Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s nominee for SCOTUS, has lied about his involvement in previous court cases? And why have Republicans been loath to criticize Kavanaugh who was on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in a 2017 case of a pregnant teenager held in federal custody? The seventeen-year old had been raped and had successfully sought an abortion, receiving permission from a Texas judge. But the girl was taken to a Christian crisis pregnancy center instead. Kavanaugh denied the teen immediate access to an abortion, requiring her to find a guardian to approve her choice. Kavanaugh kept up his denial until it was almost too late for a legal abortion. On behalf of the teenager, the American Civil Liberties Union successfully appealed Kavanaugh’s decision and the girl had the abortion the next day.
  • Why have Republicans sat silent while Trump suggests selling our national parks like Yosemite to private owners? These parks belong to us—citizens of the UNITED STATES! Republican also have been busily supporting Trump’s deregulation of environmental protections for water, air, and land, allowing the nation and Earth itself to become increasingly polluted. One example: To protect his industry supporters rather than the environment, Trump in 2017 repealed legislation that prevented coal mining companies in Appalachia from dumping their waste materials into waterways. The waste contains heavy metals that can have a damaging effect on the health of people in many Appalachian towns. Energy companies in numerous states produce electricity by burning coal and with Trump rolling back regulations, the electric companies are allowed to dump coal ash in unlined pits near the power plants. The ash contains lead and arsenic that can leach into aquifers and rivers that are drinking water sources. So do you think there will be more Flints in the USA?

What concerns me most, whether it’s Republicans or Democrats or Independents, are the bigoted, racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, and nativist comments and images that POTUS toadies release on a daily basis.  And there’s the hypocrisy of evangelistic people (Vice President Pence among them) who support a POTUS who admits to sexual assault, cheats on all of his wives, pays porn stars to keep quiet about his sexual affairs,  refuses to pay workers for their labor or services…the list goes on and on. All of this is so irritating and disgusting that I can hardly watch any TV news that features Trump and his followers basking in the glory of their “king.” So I turn to writing a blog or e-mailing a book proposal or reading a good novel or drinking a martini—or all of the above.
